Lapierre Spicy 527

Sitting here watching storm Emma pass bringing on it’s Siberian snow and freezing temperatures I decided to have a look through my photo’s from last year and to remind myself that there will be better weather to come, it’s also a good opportunity to catch up on a few stories and post a few blogs for the new website.

I’m no journalist so bear with me!!!

Since Raleigh UK or more technically correct Accell Group took ownership of the distribution of Lapierre Bikes along with Haibike they have been busy promoting the brand and getting out the word on what can only be called a great range of bikes, from their industry leading electrically assisted bikes, mountain bikes, road, gravel and urban bikes. They’ve recently just been awarded

Check out the range here:

Since setting True North Adventures up last year, Raleigh have really supported us with our hire fleet of e-bikes and also with bikes for our road and mountain bike adventures and races. So, when I said i’d test the bike, I asked how honest do you want me to be…? They responded ‘be honest’…..

Rewind to last year, after a brief hiatus of not owning a bike, but always having ridden a Santa Cruz from my good friends at Jungle Products, the boys and girls at Raleigh offered to let me ride the latest Spicy 527 at the Ard Rock Enduro.

Having been developed by the legend that is Nicolas Vouilloz and piloted to 2nd place in the 2017 Enduro World Series by Adrien Dailly its not going to bad.

So onward to the race, setting off with my mate Ben Waites from Jungle, he was on his Santa Cruz Bronson, the same bike that took me to a 4th place overall in 2016.  it would be interesting to see how a 170/165mm travel enduro bike would ride on this amazing yet challenging course up in the Yorkshire Dales.

Geometry

With the big hit capabilities of the Rockshox Lyrick 170mm forks comes greater stack height but it actually didn’t feel to high, I was personally happy with the geometry on the medium frame, to compare against the Santa Cruz Bronson it nicely sits between a medium and a large for top tube length and has an identical head angle of 66°. Although Lapierre kindly supplies a 1° angle set in the box so you adjust it to suit, which is a nice touch.

The Ride

For a big hit enduro machine the Spicy surprised me in how it pedalled! It weighed in at around 21kg  but with the lockout on the Rockshox Super Deluxe rear shock it climbed really well, no bobbing and felt pretty much like a 140-150mm travel bike for nimbleness.

The Spicy, served up with a carbon sauce! A composite frame creating an unbeatable weight / stiffness tradeoff, and OST+ virtual pivot point kinematics, providing incomparable steering without generating any pumping. Support welcomed in the form of a RockShox Super Deluxe Coil spring shock absorber, which is more sensitive and resistant to heating than an air version. Its RockShox LYRIK RC fork mount will provide all the comfort needed to withstand even the most demanding trails. Its Sram GX Eagle transmission and 10-50 cassette will ease any type of climb thanks to its wide gear ratio. The Spicy 527 comes with Lapierre AM wheels developed specifically for an endurance-based use, with inclusion of straight spokes on the transmission side for maximum reliability and optimal efficiency. Rolling on MICHELIN 2.35 WILDGRIP’R2 ADVANCED and WILD AM COMPETITION tires, you’ve got all the equipment you’ll need to take on any trail completely relaxed.
